Title: Seek Someone New
Rating: G
Word count: 298
Warnings: None
Summary: A seeker's match gives Harry an opportunity.
Harry could see her coming, her fiery hair gleaming in the sunlight. Dread pooled in his stomach like a dead weight, trying to drag him down through the ground. “Ready, Harry?” She asked brightly, coming to a stop in front of him, her broom in her hand, her warm brown eyes fixated on him. No, not really, he wanted to say. Instead he nodded and mounted his Firebolt, gripping the handle tightly. “How about a wager? If I win, you take me out on a date!” Harry could do nothing but nod.
Harry released the first Snitch he had ever caught. They waited, and on three they took off, shooting in to the sky like bullets. They raced around each other, as they waited for the Snitch to make its appearance, the wind buffeting them something fierce, causing their robes to billow and Ginny’s hair to whip about her face.
A glimmer of gold.
Harry leaned forward, urging the broom onwards, tearing towards the Snitch. Ginny was hot on his tail. She really wanted that date, it seemed. Neck and neck, they both thrust their arms out, stretching their muscles to their limits, straining desperately. A fist closed around the Snitch, and a pair of Seekers landed on the ground, dismounting their brooms. Harry decidedly avoided looking at Ginny, even as she stared at him. “I thought you’d let me win...” Ginny trailed off.
“You thought wrong,” Harry answered, trying to stay calm.
“But...you said...after the war...”
“I know what I said,” Harry snapped, whirling around to glare at Ginny, who looked rather betrayed. “But...I....Ginny...you...you need to seek someone new. I’m sorry,” he finished, voice dropping to a whisper.
Ginny took a step back, face twisting, eyes welling with moisture. She fled, a choked sob assaulting Harry’s ears.
