Title: The Quidditch Pitch (ix) Word count: 203 Warnings: Summary: Hermione tries to find herself, looking for answers in an unlikely place. EWE.
-
It’s the end of June and the students have said their goodbyes, packing their trunks and their owls and themselves onto the Hogwarts Express. Hermione hates this time of year, hates the farewells, but knows that it’s only two months of loss. In September, there will be noise and laughter reverberating through the halls and passages of the castle, and it will feel like they never left.
Alone at last, she and Ariadne head back to their favourite place – even the baby knows the path well. She whimpers and Hermione sets her on her feet, holding those little hands for support as they walk together down the beaten dirt path.
Just as she expects, he’s waiting there for them. His back is turned and his arms are folded across his chest in a defensive stance, but when Ariadne makes a sound of surprise and pleasure to find someone waiting for them, he spins around. Hermione watches as he starts towards them, then seems to think better of it and freezes, hands clenching and unclenching in that strange and unfamiliar rhythm. She and the baby walk towards him until she can see his shoulders trembling.
Hermione knows it’s too late to turn back now.
