Title: The Quidditch Pitch (viii) Word count: 204 Warnings: Summary: Hermione tries to find herself, looking for answers in an unlikely place. EWE.
-
“I had to tell him, Hermione.”
She has her back to Harry and doesn’t move when he sits on the risers just behind her. His hand falls to her shoulder and she’s half-tempted to shrug it off, half-tempted to hold it like the anchor it is. Instead, she closes her eyes into the spring breeze and doesn’t speak.
“You’ve been so alone, Hermione, I didn’t know what else to do.” There’s a helplessness in Harry’s voice that doesn’t belong there and Hermione hates herself for being the cause. “I thought just being here would help, just letting you know that I’m here for you, but I can’t stay past June. I don’t want you to be alone.”
Hermione laughs mirthlessly. “How can I be alone, Harry?” she asks. “I’m in a castle full of people.” She gestures to the child seat next to her. It’s empty – a seventh-year student has taken Ariadne for a walk near the lake – but her meaning is more than clear. “I’m never alone.”
“She needs a father,” Harry replies simply. “And you need support.”
“You think he can give me support?”
The hand on her shoulder gives a squeeze before he lets go. “I think he deserves a chance.”
