“Congratulations,” Minerva said, her amplified voice rippling across the line of players along the Quidditch pitch. “You’ve made it through the first round of House tryouts. For those of you who’ve passed the first cut, you will meet here tomorrow at ten o’clock sharp. We will be testing your skills more rigorously! For the rest of you, I’m sorry. Thank you for your time and effort. At least four members of this team will be graduating this year – myself included – and so you will have an excellent chance next year. Good luck.”
A wave of her wand and her voice went back to its normal volume. “Look, Rita,” she said in a low voice to the Chaser beside her, “Riddle’s been standing there all morning. What do you think he’s playing at?”
“What do you mean?” Furtively, Rita glanced in the boy’s direction.
“He was out at the pitch when I was flying the other day. He hasn’t reported me to Professor Dippet yet, but I don’t see what he’s waiting for.”
“Is he – is he watching you?” Rita laid a worried hand on her friend’s arm. “Do you think he’s going to do something? Blackmail you? You’re Head Girl, you know you could say something to Dippet or one of the professors. They’d do something for you!”
“I just don’t know what he wants.”
