Title: The End Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 223 Warnings: implications of character death (canon) Summary: Dumbledore needs a hiding place.
Albus rolled the small black stone around in his hand, thinking. He didn’t know if this would work, and he would not be alive to see it.
He felt sick at Harry’s fate, but there was nothing more important than destroying all of the horcruxes. All of them. Including the seventh horcrux that Voldemort himself had no knowledge of.
So, after all of this time, the boy had to die. Hopefully not permanently, but that was a risk. There was a very good chance he would die before his time, leaving the world to be subjected to magical enslavement.
But he had hope. Harry was intelligent, brave, had excellent friends, and beyond all, he was lucky. If he made it to the end, he would have to walk willingly into death’s embrace.
Given the circumstances, Albus knew it wasn’t much. But he wanted to give Harry as much comfort as he could in those final moments. And after much deliberation, he had an epiphany.
Quidditch. It was the first thing in his life that Harry ever felt he excelled at. His first game was victorious, etching a permanent happy memory in his mind.
With that realization, Albus chose the case that would hide the resurrection stone. The last thing Harry would hold in his hand, in this life, would be a happy memory.
