Summary: It's Halloween 1981 and Lily and James are preparing to take Harry trick-or-treating for the first time.
As Lily climbed the staircase, a fluffy white towel in one hand, a set of clothes in the other, the sounds of splashing made its way to her ears. A smile crept its way across her lips as she reached the top, and spotted the bathroom door ajar. She crossed the hall, and quietly opened the door, finding she had to quickly stifle a laugh with the palm of her hand. James was giving little Harry a bath...or...at least...he was trying to. “Stop squirming, Pip Squeak!” James complained, trying to get a wriggling Harry to stay still long enough for him to use the sponge to wash him.
Harry squirmed out of his grasp, and started crawling away from him, making big splashes. James reached for him, but overstretched himself, toppling off his chair, landing face first in the bathtub. There was a loud of nose against enamelled porcelain. The laugh disappearing instantly from Lily’s face, she stepped forward quickly, lifting Harry out of the bath first, wrapping him in the towel, before looking down in the bathtub. James lifted his head, even as blood drizzled out of his obviously broken nose. “Ouch,” he said, his voice thick with blood.
“Idiot,” Lily sighed fondly as James straightened, looking at her blearily with hazel eyes sitting on either side of a horridly crooked nose. With a gentle hand, she pressed her fingers to James’ nose. The man flinched, even as she murmured, “Episkey!” With another loud crack and a wave of heat, James’ nose realigned and healed instantaneously. “Tergeo!” The blood vanished from James’ face, clothes, and from inside the bathtub. As Lily made to pull away, James caught her hand.
Eyes glittering in the soft light, he lifted her hand and pressed his cheek to the back of her hand, before turning his head and pressing a kiss to the soft skin. “What would I do without you, Lily?”
Lily smiled warmly at him. “Crash and burn, I’m afraid. Come on, we need to get Harry ready; Alice and Frank will be here with Neville in a matter of minutes.” Lily pulled out the stopper from the bath, then, turned around and headed out the door, simultaneously tugging James after her, who still held on to her hand. The two of them went down the stairs, to the living room. James summoned a nappy from the nearby box of them, and then Lily went down on her knees, sitting little Harry on the couch, with the towel under him.
Lily’s heart did flip-flops as Harry gazed at her with those large, wide, innocent green eyes. His face broke in to a grin, his cheeks flushing a healthy pink as they dimpled, when he started to giggle at her. Lily’s chest constricted at the sight, before she forced herself to focus on the task of getting Harry dry and in to his Halloween costume. Remus had bought the costume last month, having spent an entire year of savings on it; a Hippogriff costume, made with real feathers. She put the nappy on him, and dressed him in the costume, buttons to the front, bird legs on Harry’s arms, horse legs on Harry’s legs, with Harry’s head peeking out from inside the open beak.
“Look at you,” she exclaimed, swinging him up in to her arms as she straightened, earning a giggle from Harry, “you’re so handsome!” Beside her, James pulled out his wand, and gave it a mighty flourish, sweeping a wave of magic around himself and Lily, creating their costumes with sheer force of will. Lily had to laugh. James was going as Count Dracula, and she was dressed as Frankenstein’s wife....after she died, which looked pretty gruesome. It was a wonder that Harry was not afraid of them.
Lily opened her mouth to say something of the like, when the fireplace flared to green life. Sirius and Remus tumbled out of the fireplace, landing in a heap on the floor, both with cameras in their hands. The two of them scrambled up from the floor, pretending as if they had not been in a most inappropriate position on the floor. Sirius was dressed as The Grim Reaper, while Remus was dressed as Prince Philip from the Muggle film Sleeping Beauty. “Pictures!” Sirius exclaimed happily.
“Lots and lots of pictures!” Remus concurred. The pair of them bounded over to where Lily, James and Harry stood bemused, raising their cameras with all haste. Click. Puff of purple smoke. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Soon the air was thick with pungent purple smoke, leaving Lily and James coughing, and Harry giggled excitedly, waving his arms about, trying to catch the smoke. Sirius took another picture just for good measure. “These beauties are going in my album,” Sirius said proudly, “and when Harry’s older we can use them as ammunition when he brings that special girl home to meet the family.”
“Absolutely!” Remus agreed, and the pair of them shared a maniacal grin.
“I can’t wait for that,” James said, an evil grin playing across his face, made all the more startling with the appearance of his vampire-fangs. “He’s going to be so mortified!”
“You leave my Harry alone when that day comes,” Lily said defensively, before adding on, “besides, if Harry’s anything like his Dad, he won’t need any of you to embarrass him...he’ll be quite capable of doing it himself.”
“Hey!”
Lily laughed, ducking to avoid a conjured pillow. At that precise moment there was a knock on the front door. “That’ll be Alice, Frank and Neville! Come one, my loves! It’s time to go trick-or-treating!”
