Title: An Ode to an Ending (iii)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 417
Character(s): Augusta Longbottom
Warnings (if any):
Summary: Frank deserved Alice. Even you can see that.
-
Alice secures an O on every one of her N.E.W.T.s and you are there at her graduation ceremony. She spends every Christmas and most of the summers with you and Frank, and continues to do so even during Frank’s final year at Hogwarts. She has successfully completed her Auror training by the time Frank starts his, and you are grateful when you learn that they’ve been assigned partners. You know you can trust Alice with your son’s life.
They get married in the middle of the First Wizarding War. You give Frank his father’s enchanted pocket watch and you give Alice a locket that has been in your family for generations. Welcoming Alice into your family is like welcoming home a long-lost loved one. It is a little more difficult with her parents.
Alice’s mother refuses to come to the wedding. She hates Frank, and as his mother you can find no good reason to justify such feelings. Her father is there, though, and he is playful. You think he never really grew up and that’s why he has such difficulty being a parent. But he’s there at the most important time of her life, there to escort her to her new husband’s side and there to laugh uproariously at her shocked expression when you find a mouse chewing on the inside of your handbag.
Nearly four years into their marriage, they’re blessed with a child, and when Neville is still an infant you receive a new red handbag for your birthday, along with a card that is decorated with your grandson’s hand and foot prints. The card is a treasure that you’re afraid to lose in this time of turmoil, and so you tuck it into an enchanted box and hide it in the floo of the fireplace in your bedroom.
Not six months later, you receive word that Alice and Frank are in brutal condition, that they’ve been rushed to St. Mungo’s and that their son needs a caretaker. It’s the first time Neville hasn’t cried while you’ve held him in your arms, and as his big eyes stare solemnly up into yours, you can’t help but realise that this child is all that remains of your son’s powerful, brave spirit and his wife’s cool, clever strength. You make a silent promise that no matter what happens in that outside world, you will raise your grandson to walk in his parents’ footsteps.
So long as you have him, you will never really lose your children.
