Title: An Ode to an Ending (ii)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 357
Character(s): Augusta Longbottom
Warnings (if any):
Summary: Frank deserved Alice. Even you can see that.
-
“My birthday is in April,” Alice tells you as you sit with her for breakfast one morning. “I’ll be seventeen. I can’t believe how fast my time at school is flying. I’ve only got one year left and no idea what I want to do with my future.”
Frank is fifteen, only going into his sixth year, and that is something else that catches you completely off-guard. This girl is petite; you’d never have expected her to be at least a year his senior. Your son is becoming more and more like his father every day - you were, in fact, two years his senior in school – and each new discovery surprises you. You wonder briefly if Frank had pursued Alice the same way your husband had pursued you, you who had never spared him more than a brief glance across the Great Hall.
Alice’s secret smile flashes across her face, causing you to lift a brow. “Frank’s going to be an Auror,” she tells you rather decisively. “He’d be rubbish working any old Ministry job and he’s most certainly not suited to teaching.”
It’s obvious that she both admires and respects your son, and that makes you admire and respect her just a little bit more. “Judging by what my son has told me, you would make for an excellent Auror yourself.” It is close to a compliment and you’re almost startled at your own words, but Alice’s face lights up and she murmurs, “Yes, yes, perhaps.”
Christmas is full of magic. Sunlight streams in through the windows, glistening on the new snow, and you laugh more than you’ve done collectively since Frank’s father died all those years ago. When it’s time for the young folk to return to the train and be whisked off to school again, you accompany them to the train station. Frank is quite obviously startled at this change in routine, but before they board the Express you impulsively reach out to touch Alice’s sleeve and she turns back to embrace you tightly. “Thank you for a fantastic Christmas,” the girl whispers, and you whisper back, “You are always welcome here, Alice.”
