Summary: ...What do you think will happen?
They had been trick-or-treating for nearly an hour and a half and were on the last house in Godric’s Hollow when Harry rested his head against Lily’s shoulder, beginning to drift off. Lily acknowledged that the little tot had, had a long day, and deserved a good night’s sleep. It was time to head home. She reached out and patted James’ arm lightly. He looked at her, and then spotted Harry snoozing against Lily’s shoulder. He nodded and then addressed the group, quietly. “Guys, I think the day’s been long enough for Harry. I think we might head back home, now, if that’s okay.”
“Oh, sure! Harry deserves a good rest,” Alice replied, smiling softly at Lily and James. “As Neville’s still awake, we’ll finish up here and head over to start in Upper Flagley. Augusta wants to see Neville in his costume before she turns in for the night. Sirius, Remus, you can come, too, if you like.”
“Sure!” Sirius agreed excitedly.
“I have to head home, too, I’m afraid,” Remus said, pouting for a moment.
The two Marauders both came forward, and pressed soft kisses to Harry’s nose, before they went off with Alice and Frank, with Sirius called over his shoulder, “enjoy the rest of your night, Prongs!” Remus waved and disapparated, even as Alice and Frank knocked on the last door. James wrapped his arm around Lily’s waist, and Lily rested her head against his shoulder. The two of them strode back towards their own house, quickly enough, and were just unlocking the door, when they heard the others disapparate out of Godric’s Hollow.
“James, put away the candy, while I put him to bed, will you?” Lily asked quietly.
“Will do,” he replied, before kissing her forehead lightly, lingering momentarily as he inhaled her scent. “You smell divine,” he murmured.
“Flattery will get you nowhere.”
James grinned impishly. “Flattery got me everywhere.”
Lily swatted his arm, but could not help but smile at him. “Go on,” she said, and gave him a playful shove.
Lily was just heading up the stairs when there was a knock on the front door. “Trick or Treat!” said a voice outside. She made to come back down the stairs to answer the door, but James waved her off, taking a few bouncing strides towards the door. James grasped the handle, turned it, and pulled the door open. He let out a yell of surprise before slamming the door shut. James ran the tip of his wand down the side of the door as the figure outside erupted in cold, high-pitched laughter.
“Run! Lily, take Harry and run! It’s him!” James shouted, taking several running steps backwards until he was beside her. Before she could say or do anything, James cupped her face in both hands, and gazed in to her eyes for a brief moment, before claiming her mouth with all haste and desperation. “Take the passage in the play-room!” he whispered frantically against her lips. “Go! I’ll hold him off...Lily...I...”
“I know,” Lily whispered, her arms tightening around Harry instantly, “I know.” They jumped in surprise when the door started splintering in slow-motion. Merlin, he was playing with them! As James turned to face the front door, wand held tightly in a shaking hand, face set in determination; Lily turned tail and ran, clutching Harry close to her chest. At this point Harry was beginning to pull out of his nap, being tossed around as he was by Lily’s swift movements. Behind her the front door exploded, and she had to throw herself and Harry down on to the floor, even as splinters as big as a fist sailed through the air, missing her head by mere millimetres.
Harry whimpered, his nose crinkling up. Lily knew he was ready to start crying. “Shush!” she pleaded, kissing Harry’s forehead as she scrambled up from the floor. She chanced a look behind her and saw the shrouded form of Voldemort advance on James, who’d been blown off his feet by the blast, and was sporting numerous injuries in his arms and legs. James raised his wand, and pointed it straight at Voldemort’s heart....or where his heart should be, rather. A moan of anguish ripped up from Lily’s chest...regardless of how much faith she had in James, she knew this would not end well...and so did James.
Lily tore her eyes away as the sounds of battle ensued, accompanied by snarls of anger and gasps of pain. She stumbled in to the play-room, and pulled the door shut with a bang, warding the door with several powerful Locking and Protective Charms. She ran across the play-room, almost tripping over an upturned edge of the rug on the floor. She set Harry down in the spare crib, and then shoved it out of the way, revealing the trapdoor in the floor. She reached for the heavy handle, even as a loud thump echoed down the hall.
Lily froze, her face contorting in a silent scream of emotional agony, her vision blurring with tears. It was too late. She pulled the crib back in place, and lifted Harry in to her arms. She showered his face in loving wet kisses as she squeezed him close to her heart. Unable to understand, but feeling her aura, Harry’s face crumpled, and large tears started sliding down from his green eyes. Lily flicked her wrist, and a silvery doe shot out of her palm. “Sirius, Harry needs you,” she whispered, the sound of her own pain lacing her word. She thrust her arm forward, and the Patronus shot out of the window.
Behind her, the door was pulled off its hinges and thrown aside. Lily dropped Harry in to the crib, and whirled around, pressing her back to the bars protectively. “Step aside, you silly girl,” Voldemort hissed, red eyes gleaming at her from within the shadows of the hood of his robe.
“No.”
“Step aside now!” he spat, raising his wand.
“I’d rather die.”
“Very well.”
