Summary: Some idiocy while trick-or-treating!
Lily pulled open the front door to find Alice and Frank standing there, dressed as Sonny and Cher – this was Lily’s influence because they were trick-or-treating in a predominately Muggle area. Little Neville was curled up in Alice’s arms, adorably dressed as a lion, his tail swishing as he grinned out at her from inside the lion’s maw. Lily squealed excitedly, and started fanning the air like a typical girl at the sight of something so adorable. Sirius and Remus’ heads popped up over her shoulder, blocked by black cameras. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. They took a mother-load of photographs of Neville in his costume.
Sirius would have taken more, but Neville made an intensely unhappy face and summoned Sirius’ camera right out of the man’s hand. “That’s my boy!” Frank said encouragingly, puffing out his chest proudly. Frank did not like posing for photographs either and it was easy to see the apple did not fall too far from the tree in that regard. Across from Neville, nestled in Lily’s arms, Harry waved an arm around, and let out a high-pitched sound, as if agreeing with Frank. It seemed neither Neville nor Harry liked photographs that much.
The six adults started laughing at the notion, and it took several long moments for them to get themselves under control once more. Wiping tears of mirth off his face with one hand, Frank reached in to his pocket with the other, and pulled out two foldable pumpkin-style bags for candy. He handed one to James and they shared a grin. “Everyone ready?”Alice asked, even as Sirius snatched his camera back from Neville and stuffed it in to his robes. Remus did the same. They all nodded in answer to Alice’s question. “Let’s go, then; we’re burning half-moon light.”
James pulled the door closed, and the eight of them made their way out on to the street, where Muggle families were busy taking their little ones out trick-or-treating. Lily’s heart pounded harshly against her robes. She knew that, at any moment, these happy times could come crashing to an end for any of these families...that any one of them could be the headline of a morning paper...another family wiped from the face of the earth by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Lily’s stomach roiled suddenly, and she had to fight the urge to bring up her dinner from that day.
Lily tightened her arms around Harry, holding him still closer. She turned her head a little and noticed Alice doing the same, resting her chin against the top of Neville’s head. Alice turned her head slightly. Their eyes met. Each of them could see the fear and sorrow reflected in each other’s eyes. James and Frank made the same move simultaneously; they wrapped their arms around their waves, tugging them close to their sides, as if just being there could defend them from anything that came their way.
As a group they went to the first house on the street, which belonged to dear old Bathilda Bagshot. When they reached the door, Sirius grasped the bronze knocker, and knocked nice and loud, to ensure Bathilda heard them at the door. A few minutes later there came a light shuffling from the other side of the door, and Lily and Alice quickly held their children out in front of them, face towards the door, hands firm and sure around their sons’ torsos. “Trick or Treat!” the chorused as the door opened, and the eight of them were illuminated by a square of orange light as Bathilda greeted them, saggy face brightening merrily.
“Oh!” she exclaimed, clapping her wrinkled hands in delight. “What marvellous costumes! Aren’t you both just the sweetest little things!” Harry and Neville giggled and gave her their biggest, happiest baby grins, earning a big smile from Bathilda. The old woman summoned a cauldron full of candy. James and Frank automatically held out Harry’s and Neville’s treat bags, smiling like idiots. “Some nice treats for a pair of nice boys!” she said, and she dropped fistfuls of candy in to both bags. She, then, snapped her fingers. “And a pair of candied apples for my favourite mischief makers,” she said, handing them to Sirius and Remus, who both started grinning like dorks.
“Thank you!” the group chorused. They bade Bathilda a good evening, and turned towards the street as Bathilda closed the door again. Sirius stepped up beside James, and poked him. “Apparently, you’re not her favourite mischief maker.”
“Shut up!” James replied, aiming to kick him.
“James!” Lily scolded.
“Lily!”James whined.
“Frank!” Alice added, in an attempt to get Frank to agree with Lily.
“Alice!” Frank retorted, as if to say mind your own business.
“Remus!” Lily whined, trying to swindle the Werewolf on to her side.
“Lily!” Remus said, as if to say leave me out of this.
“Sirius!” Sirius yelled happily. Everyone fell silent and started staring at him. Sirius blinked. “What? I was feeling left out...” Sirius trailed off, just before having to duck out of the way of Lily’s hand, which came at him suddenly. “Hey!” Sirius whined. “Evans!”
“Potter!” James snapped, glaring darkly at Sirius.
“No, I’m Black,” Sirius replied impishly. “I think you’re a bit confused.”
“You’re heading straight for a smacked-bottom, if you don’t hush up,” James threatened.
Sirius grinned mischievously. “Hey, Evans, I think Jamie here might swing bo – Aaaaaah!” Sirius clutched his rear end, and glared at Remus, looking highly betrayed. “Remus! How could you?”
“Well, it was just sashaying beside me, looking really tempting! I couldn’t resist!”
“Meany,” Sirius pouted
“Ah, you love me, really.” Sirius mumbled something incoherent in response, which resulted in Remus bursting out laughing. He had obviously picked it up with his sensitive hearing.
“Come on,” Lily sighed exasperatedly. “We’ve got a whole village of doors to trick-or-treat at before we can go home!”
