Title: Realization
Rating: PG
Warning: None
Summary: Hermione realizes she might just be making the biggest mistake of her life.
Realization, it always hits you when you lose something close to you. When your family dog dies, you realize then that you will never be able to replace the old faithful dog that you used to play with as you grew up. When a family member dies it hits you like a brick when you realize that you will never see that person again and that you should have spent more time with that person. For Harry Potter though realization hit him like a bullet train at his two friend’s wedding, he realized then that he would never get a chance to be with the woman he truly loves, one Hermione Granger.
You see it all started back during the Horcrux hunt, while they were staying in the tent. He began seeing Hermione in a different light; he stopped seeing her as a sister but rather as a woman, a woman who he had been in love with for quite a long time. It did take a lot out of him when he realized that and at first it shocked him to the core. At first he thought it was just a platonic love he felt for as that was the only type of love he ever knew of but as time flew by he knew that it was not the same love he had for her as before. It was different, much more deeper. He began to notice all of her physical aspects and began to have rather illicit dreams of her which would have anyone blush Weasley red if they ever saw it. He also began to realize how much she meant to him emotionally. She was the only one who always stood by his side, the only one who believed him and the only one who knew him like the back of their hand. She was his rock; he fought for her and only her.
It was hard for him watching her and Ron together, always talking in whispers with their heads together away from him. He didn’t know whether they were a couple or not but he had the inkling that they both had some feelings for each other and that increased the pain in his heart. Everyday watching them broke his heart a little more.
One day though it all changed, it was the day that Ron left, it was the day that hope crept into his heart slowly repairing it. Hermione had cried for a whole week and he was there to offer a shoulder to cry on. He helped her in every way possible, whether it be a simple hug or him making a cup of tea for her. Finally the day arrived, it was the day that he was going to tell her the truth, it was the day he told her he loved her but as everything in Harry Potter’s life this turned to the dogs as well.
She was sitting at the entrance of the tent on watch, shivering from the cold as she huddled up into her coat seeking out any kind of warmth. He watched her from where he sat in the kitchen and he knew now was the time. He stood up and walked over to her and sat next to her, his movement startled her a bit before she relaxed and slowly allowed her head to rest on his shoulder. He sat there enjoying the feel of her against him as he readied himself for what he was about to do. Slowly he put his hand under her chin and lifted her head to face him. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity wondering what he was about to do. Slowly he leaned forward towards her, his eyes staying on hers. Their lips finally met and her eyes widened in slight shock as to what was happening. Soon though she unfroze and leaned into the kiss as well. Harry closed his eyes as the kiss deepened, savoring the taste and feel of her soft smooth lips. He reached forward and put one hand behind her head and the other on her back bringing her forward. She placed both her hands on his head and gripped his wild hair roughly. He parted his lips and ran his tongue along hers seeking entrance to which she obliged. Their tongues tangled in a furious dance as Harry poured every feeling he had into the kiss. Slowly after what felt like eternity the two parted ways gasping for oxygen they so desperately needed. Harry with his hand still on her back leaned forward and placed his forehead onto hers, his green eyes boring into her brown ones seeking entrance into her soul.
Then he whispered in a ragged breath “I love you.”
Her breath hitched as the words entered her brain. She moved back away from him and said the three words that were like magic to his ears “I love you.”
And then his whole world came crashing down as she carried speaking “But we can’t. I’m sorry Harry.”
With that said and without any explanation she walked away and out of the tent leaving Harry there with a broken heart. After that day he never really spoke to her, sure he said hello and made small talk so as to not cause any suspicion, but they never really talked like before.
Now he stood in the Weasley’s back garden watching his best friend marry the woman he loved and he realized that he would never have her. With that in mind and with tears in his eyes Harry walked to one of the tables and grabbed a bottle of firewhisley. He turned and saw that the minister had just asked Hermione if she did and before she answered she turned towards the back and for a moment that felt like eternity their eyes met. Harry started into those brown eyes and savored them before giving her a discrete nod and turning and apparating away, away from it all and away from her.
Hermione Granger wondered to herself if she was making the right choice. It was her wedding day and she was currently standing beside her husband to be, Ronald Weasley and she was beginning to wonder if what she did in the tent was the right choice. The minister droned on and she soon blocked him out as she went over in her head as to the choice she had made all those months ago.
When Harry had told her that he loved her she was elated, in fact she felt as if she was on top of the world. She had been waiting for him to say it for such a long time, all those years in school she had thought that he would have noticed her after all the signals that she gave him. And now finally he told her those words that she ached to hear. But she couldn’t, not now, not when it appeared that he might die at any moment. Her head told her that it was wrong and that she should take the safer side while her heart told her the exact opposite and that she should go with Harry, she chose her head and now on her wedding day she wondered if it was the right decision.
She came out of her musing when she felt a nudge from Ginny, her bridesmaid and she realized that the minister had just asked her the question that she had no answer to. She looked around and saw him standing in the back. Their eyes met and she could see the immense pain in his eyes. She saw him give her a small nod before grabbing a bottle of whiskey and apparating away and in that time Hermione Granger realized that she had made the greatest mistake in her life.
