Helga sighed, resting her head on the hard chest that lay before her; she enjoyed the feel of his hot skin against her cheek. As she watched the dying embers fade from the hearth, she felt Godric’s heart slowly resume its normal rate.
Closing her eyes, she allowed herself to be temporarily soothed by the large fingers running through her hair. But it wouldn’t leave her mind; she could never really be relaxed. Not even with him. Not anymore.
“It’s getting out of hand, love,” she finally brought herself to say.
“Hmm?” He was falling asleep, she knew. As he always did.
“Our standards are too… exclusive these days. We turned away more than we accepted this year.”
There was no response; his body didn’t move at all. But she could feel his eyes on her. She could feel his wariness; he knew it bothered her.
It bothered her, and it was worse with each passing year. She no longer enjoyed the sorting ceremony, although she still attended.
Her stomach clenched, thinking about the disappointed faces of those children who didn’t quite fit into any of their moulds of desirable students. The children who were sent from Hogwarts to return home.
“We all agreed on our requirements,” he replied carefully. He untangled his fingers from her hair, slipping his hand down to trace patterns along her back. “You will accept the just and loyal.”
I’ll take them all. Propping herself up on her elbow, she knew it was true. “I want you to modify the sorting hat, Godric.”
“You’ve committed, don’t forget-”
“My loyalty,” she interrupted, “is with the students. Don’t you forget.”
