"Who's that?"
"An exchange student?"
"Did you see her eyes?"
The whispers followed Phoenix off the train, into the carriages (she was grateful to learn she wasn't expected to cross the lake by boat like the First years), and up the steps of the castle. She ignored them best she could and distracted herself by straightening her robes and smoothing her long black hair.
"Phoenix Fyrechild?"
Phoenix looked up. The woman who called her was a lean woman with a stern face and hair back in a tight bun. Right away she reminded Phoenix of her Grandmother.
"I'm Professor McGonagall." Said the woman, "Professor Dumbledore has decided you will wait until the First years have been sorted and then come up to take your place on the stool. Any questions?"
Green-grey eyes looked her over before finally meeting red ones. If she knew what Phoenix was she didn't say it.
Phoenix shook her head, indicating she had no questions.
"Very good." She hurried away and herded the pack of nervous First Years into the Great Hall.
Now all she had to do was wait. She played with the pendent that always hung around her throat, a blood red stone that cast lights against the stone walls.
"What's this?"
Phoenix looked up. A little man floated above her wearing a grin. "You're not an ickle Firstie! Who are-" He was cut off mid sentence when he caught sight of her eyes.
"Vampire." He whispered and then he sucked in a large breath. He was going to scream it out for all to hear! Everyone would know what she was before she had even set foot in her first class!
Quick as a flash she pointed a finger at him. She didn't need a wand, she had never used one, her Grandmother had taught her they were simply amplifiers for raw magic.
"Silencio!"
The little man choked, hands gasping to his throat. Then his face turned red and for a second Phoenix thought he was going to throw a tantrum. But then Professor McGonagall appeared again.
"This way Phoenix." She said.
Phoenix hurried out, leaving red faces little man sputtering in the air. Professor McGonagall gave the poltergeist a puzzled look and then followed to lead Phoenix up to the Sorting Hat.
* ~ * ~ * ~
The same whispers from the train followed Phoenix up the Great Hall and on to the stool where the tattered old hat was placed on her head.
She jumped when a voice spoke in her ear.
Well, well, well. I have never never sat on the head of one of your kind before, oh no. A part goblin, a half giant, and a werewolf yes but a half-vampire oh no.
Phoenix's mouth went dry. How could this... Hat know what she was?
I am the Sorting Hat. I see what is in your mind and in your heart. Using what I see I place you into the House in which I think you belong.
And me? She thought, unsure if the hat could hear her. Where do I belong?
Hmmmm. Difficult choice, difficult choice, difficult choice. You are intelligent, I can see it there. Courageous too I think, ah yes, I see it there. But there is more there. Cunning, resourceful, and a little bit...? You could be one of the great ones, you are already on the way, there is one place that can help you with that... but bloodline may not be what they are used to, but still I think you shall be-
"SLYTHERIN!"
The hat shouted the last word and the Great Hall erupted with cheers and applause from the far table. The Hat was lifted from her head and Phoenix walked to her new House Table.
Draco Malfoy was applauding loudest of all and he had already pushed a Third Year aside to make a spot for her right next to him.
