Title: A Moment of Happy
Rating: PG
Prompt #:#4: Teachings
Word Count: 474 words.
Summary: In the process of consolidating their Patronus learning, James and Lily discover that it's not too late to learn things about each other, either.
Notes: Contains an in-text reference to The Sound of Music as well as allusions/references to A Very Potter Musical and The Princess Bride.
“Think a happy thought.”
“Any happy thought?” James and Sirius chime, angelic expressions on their faces. I roll my eyes.
Alice raises an eyebrow. “Preferably one that has a strong, lasting emotion behind it.”
“And that isn’t in the gutter,” Frank said, looking pointedly at Sirius. “And then, once you’ve focused entirely on that thought, you recite, Expecto Patronum. Non-corporeal patroni are not going to do the Order any good and if you can’t get a corporeal we then face communication difficulties. When you’re ready.”
James looks across the room and gives me an encouraging smile. I smile back, and wrack my brains for a purely happy memory.
“Expecto Patronum!” My voice is not alone in the cry, and a beam of light shoots from my wand, before a silvery doe erupts. I blink in the remaining brightness, feeling an arm slip around my waist, and watch as my doe joins a silvery stag.
“Interesting.” James murmurs, his lips brushing the tip of my ear. I lean back into his arm.
“Mmmm. Interesting.” I smile.
“Good. Very good.” Alice smiles. “And telling. The theory’s behind you.”
“So,” James says, his eyes determinedly focused on the book. “What did you think of?”
“You first.”
“Ladies first.” I sigh in reply.
“The look on your face when you realised I was serious when I told you I was in love with you.” James smiles, and takes my hand off the table, linking our fingers.
“What were you thinking of?” I ask coyly.
“The look on your face when you realised I meant it when I said I loved you.”
“That’s your happiest memory.”
“That’s yours?”
“You have the Marauders, and all your hijinks, and your happiest memory is of making me realise that you actually do love me.”
“I’ve got other happy memories. But that one meant the most.”
“You’re actually going sappy on me.”
“Why was it yours?”
I smirk. “I knew I was making your every dream and fantasy come true and be a reality. That’s a pretty big deal.”
“And what about our patronuses?”
“They’re reflective of our inner selves, aren’t they?” I ask, and James nods. “So I guess I have you to blame for making me into a deer for all eternity.”
“There could be worse things to be. Like a mouse. Or a toad.”
“I’m happy to be a deer. A doe. A doe, a deer, a female deer.” I smile.
“And far is a long long way to run.” He grins back. “So, apparently, I have to concentrate hard both on my memory, the person I want to send the message to, and the message I want to send.”
“How will you manage that?” I laugh, and he glares at me, hiding his smile behind the book.
“Go stand on the other side of the room.”
“As you wish.”
