The icy stares coming from the Slytherin table could almost freeze the flickering flames on the candles as they stared at Rosaline who stood meeting their eyes unflinching under the unwelcoming looks. Moving to the end of the table furthest from the Professor’s table to sit with the first years, Rosaline went to take a seat to have a student slide into the spot and glare at her.
“Oh I see how it is going to be,” Rosaline thought and a subtle flick of her wand expanded the table taking the seat she made for herself quickly before anyone could slide into it. Flicking her eyes up to the professors table signaling her victory over her housemates and Rosaline raised an eyebrow at the approving nod she got from the dark haired professor that looked as if he had been to school in this century.
“To our newcomers,” said Dumbledore in his ringing voice, his arms stretched wide and a beaming smile on his lips, “welcome! To our old hands, welcome back! There is a time for speech making, but this is not it. Tuck in!” Dumbledore sat down neatly as the tables filled with food.
Rosaline twitched her nose at the smells assaulting her nose having been a vegetarian since she was twelve the smell of the cooked meat was making her sick to her stomach.
Rosaline looked about the Great Hall seeing her sisters smiling and laughing along with their new housemates. Catching Dean’s eye he smiled and mouthed, “Sorry”. Rosaline shrugged and turned her eyes back to her own table to find the other students looking at her.
“May I help you?” Rosaline asked unblinking at the stares from her housemates making them turn their heads back to their plates. Knowing she needed to eat something looked for something that looked like vegetables, Rosaline wrinkling her nose at the boiled mixed veggies dishing a small helping onto her plate along with a roll.
“What a feast,” Rosaline thought and took a bite of the vegetables trying not to gag at the mushy texture taking a bite of the roll made Rosaline reach for three more. The last time she had rolls this good was when her Grandmother made them at Thanksgiving and Christmas before she died. Rosaline was far from full as dinner dishes were exchanged for desert, having a massive sweet tooth, she tried everything near her.
“I’m going to gain so much weight,” Rosaline thought looking down at her flat stomach, “with no dance rehearsals to burn off the calories.”
“Well, now that we are all digesting another magnificent feast, I beg a few moments of your attention for the usual start-of-term notices,” Dumbledore said, “All new students ought to know that the forest on the grounds is out of bounds to students as a few of our older students should know by now too.” Rosaline caught the smirks from Harry and his two friends.
“Mr. Flich, the caretaker, has asked me, for what he tells me is the four hundred and sixty-second time, to remind you all that magic is not permitted in corridors between classes, nor are a number of other things, all of which can be checked on the extensive list now fastened to Mr. Flich’s door.”
“We have had two changes in staffing this year. We are very pleased to welcome back Professor Grubby-Plank, who will be taking Care of Magical Creatures lessons; we are also delighted to introduce Professor Umbridge, our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.”
Rosaline didn’t like Umbridge the moment she saw her from her toad like look but most importantly the amount a fully grown woman was wearing of pink.
“Tryouts for House Quidditch teams will take place on the…” Dumbledore was saying when Umbridge stood next to his chair making him look at the new professor, Umbridge said “Hem, hem,” Setting Rosaline’s teeth on edge as she watch Dumbledore take his seat see the surprise on many of the professors and students faces.
“Thank you, Headmaster,” Professor Umbridge simpered, “for those kind words of welcome.”
Rosaline wanted to laugh at the sound of the Professor’s voice being far too high pitched and child like for her age biting her lip at the sound of hem, hem before Umbridge continued on with her speech, “Well, it is lovely to be back at Hogwarts, I must say!” She smiled, showing off her pointed teeth, “And to see such happy little faces looking back at me!”
Rosaline looked around the Great Hall to notice the woman was delusional; she clenched her jaw so hard the rest of the speech that
Rosaline was surprised to find that she hadn’t cracked a tooth. Rosaline didn’t notice when the toad had finished until there was a shuffling of feet Rosaline got up to fallow her fellow housemates.
Trying to catch the eye of any of her sisters to wave goodbye, Rosaline was disappointed to note they hadn’t even turned to look for her. Trudging after her housemates, the further from the Great Hall they got the more she felt the freeze out of her housemates.
Not letting anything she felt show on her face was easier than said than done but years of being in the music industry had taught her how to have a poker face. Coming to a blank wall Rosaline heard the pug like girl call out dum vivimus servimus. The wall pulled back reveling the Slytherin Common Room, Rosaline was the last through the doorway having stopped to think over the meaning of the password. Looking over the common room she watched as the older students took the seats closest to the fireplace with the younger years ringing outwards. Planting herself against the wall she crossed her arms across her chest realizing that her performance dress had been changed back into the school uniform as she waited for something to happen.
Six students stood in front of the fireplace after everyone had quieted down. A tall wide menacing looking boy stepped forward and to talk, “Welcome back Slytherin House and welcome first years to the illustrious Slytherin House. I am Adrian Pucey along with Anthea Greengrass, Evan Rosier, Aquila Lestrange, Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson are your house Prefects. Our jobs is to keep order within the school, we will take points from you if you are not fallowing the rules. We can give detentions if forced to.”
His dark eyes swept the room.
“We expect from the Slytherin House exemplary marks in academics along with upstanding decorum. We know that you all will rise to the challenge. For second years and up we will be holding Quidditch Try-outs on Thursday for starting, back-up and practice teams. I turn the floor over to Professor Snape our head of house.”
Rosaline watched as the dark haired professor swept to the front of the audience with drama and elegance. His dark eyes moved across the room slowly to meet each student’s eyes and nodded.
“Welcome all of you to the Snake Pit,” Snape said, “this is a new school year a new year tinged with excitement steaming from the end of last year. We in the Slytherin House have much to be excited for with the rebirth of Our Lord the heir of Slytherin who has come to purge the school of the mudblood filth that has invaded our beloved school.”
Rosaline watched Snape’s eyes seeing to true distaste of the words he was saying.
“We must be vigilant in who we speak to about Our Lord, where we speak of these things and when we speak. I counsel you to only speak of these things within the safety of our great house. I truly believe this year Slytherin House will rise again to win the House Cup along with the Quidditch Cup. I believe this will be the best year Slytherin House has ever seen. Good Luck to all of you in your pursuit of Academic and Sporting excellent. Off to bed with all of you.”
“Miss Addams may I speak with you in my office before you retire to bed,” Snape asked but the tone of his voice didn’t broker for anything but a yes.
